Of school and dinners

Sorry for not writing yesterday…I got home much later than I anticipated and was much too tired to even think about writing. Hope you all don’t mind too much!

So I actually had to get up early (8am!) to go to class yesterday and I was definitely not looking forward to it. I won’t bore you with what happened during my school day but I did find out a few things:

1. Yes, it was a break the day I left early and they took notes after that. Whoops.

2. It wasn’t supposed to rain as I had originally planned and I spent almost all day sweating in my tights and long-sleeved top.

3. The food at the economic department is so expensive! 20kr (nearly 3 dollars) for a coke!? What the heck.

I spent my 2 hour break between class outside and started reading my microeconomics book, despite it being the wrong one. At least it helped me a little with the information we were covering. While I can understand, as I mentioned, major concepts and things concerning opportunity cost, I feel like there are certain definitions that are flying right over my head. I started to worry as class went on but then I felt a little relief knowing the entire first book is in English. I went to speak with my adviser after class and she told me there is no date for the last day to drop and she said not to worry. If I’m still feeling unsure at the end of the week after I speak with my professor, I won’t buy the books and I’ll change my course (despite this being a required class for my home university, it just can’t be done…you try learning economics in another language).

After this, I went to my new nation’s welcome dinner for all new students. We got a tour around and I officially signed up for choir (starts Thursday at 6:30) and the magazine (they don’t have anyone who knows InDesign!). I met one girl, Luci, from Czech Republic in my tour group and then she introduced me to loads of people prior to dinner including Lindsey from Canada and Anya from Ireland. As we were waiting, I met two Swedish guys - Hakan and…something else I can’t remember because it was really hard to pronounce) and a I spent a lot of my time practicing my Swedish. They were so suprised by how good I was! Yes! At dinner we had some meat and potatoes (typical, eh?) followed by some blackberry cake and custard…soooo good. There was also coffee and tons of singing (if you didn’t know, this is very common in Scandinavia). I was hoping to be done by 7pm but considering we didn’t eat until then, I didn’t get home until 10 haha. I’m glad the police didn’t pull me over on my bike because I still haven’t put my light on it, oops. Amanda apparently went out and bought more bread for us and tried to find town and got lots. Props to her for at least trying!

(See next post about today…didn’t want to make this too long)
